Cardiovascular disease

– Cardiovascular disease includes several diseases. The most common are angina, myocardial infarction and stroke.

These diseases are caused by fatty deposits on the inside of the blood vessels, which can eventually lead to decreased blood supply to vital organs such as the heart and brain.

– Angina occurs when the coronary arteries of the heart are narrowed so that the heart muscle does not get enough blood supply with oxygen. This can be experienced by tightness or chest pain when exerted. The pain usually goes by itself when you take it easy.

– Heart attack occurs now the coronary arteries become completely dense, so that part of the heart muscle does not get oxygen. This can be experienced with sudden tightness and pain in the chest, usually with radiance to the left arm and to the throat. Often one becomes nauseous, throws up and becomes pale and cold sweat. The pain does not diminish at rest.

Heart attack has traditionally been a human disease. New figures show, however, that most women are affected by the disease in Norway today.

– In recent years, we have observed that more women than men are hospitalized with heart attacks and severe heart disease. We are worried that the number will increase in the future, says Professor Jostein Holmen, professor of social medicine at NTNU.

Consistency with weight gain

Holmen is head of the Health Survey in Nord-Trøndelag (HUNT), the largest population study in Norway. He says that the increase in the number of myocardial infarction is closely linked to general weight gain, smoking and inactivity among women.

– Many still smoke. In addition, figures from HUNT show that women in the 30-40 years of age are the ones who have gained the most weight. This significantly increases the risk of heart disease, he says.

At the same time, several studies have shown that obese are out of heart attack than normal.

Starting in the 20’s

Heart attack is due to the small blood vessels that supply the heart, the coronary arteries, close. The calcification process that causes this starts early, already in the 20’s.

– When a coronary artery closes, or occludes, you get particular symptoms such as pain in the middle of the chest with radius to the left shoulder and shortness of breath. Also more diffuse symptoms like nausea, cold sweat and anxiety are common, says Jostein Holmen.

The symptoms of infarction are: Strong chest pain lasting more than 20 minutes. Pain that radiates to the arms, back, neck or stomach. Anxiety, unwellness / sickness, nausea, breathing problems and diffuse ailments like pain in arms, shoulder, jaw and neck.

Expensive time

– If you get severe chest pain or become unusually heavy breathing, seek medical advice immediately.. If you have a heart attack, time is expensive, says Holmen.

The heart muscle begins to weaken thirty minutes after occlusion. After six hours all of the muscles the artery supplies death.

General Secretary Frode Jahren of the National Association for Cardiovascular Disease (LHL) states that women are at greater risk than men to have a so-called atypical or dumb heart attack.

Not everyone is experiencing the typical chest pain. Many may have unspecific symptoms such as pain in the jaw and neck, tiredness and general feeling of feeling unwell. Instead of thinking about a heart attack, one can think that you only have the flu, he says.

Jahren believes it is important to take the symptoms seriously and warn against overlook or trivialize the signs of a heart attack.

– The fact that you do not notice the heart attack makes it no less dangerous. Wet symptoms may cause a heart attack to be detected too late, or not at all, with disability or death, “he says..

Saved mortality will increase

Professor Jostein Holmen says that both mortality and cardiac insufficiency peaked in the 1970s, and have progressed gradually down to today.

Nevertheless, he sees the future negatively.

Although there are fewer who get sick and die of cardiovascular disease now than before, I’m afraid that this tendency will turn around, “he says..

Beware the waist target

Frode Jahren in LHL says there are several factors that contribute to atherosclerosis. Among other things, high concentrations of cholesterol and other fats in the blood, high blood pressure and high blood sugar are the most important.

– You should measure and monitor resting heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar regularly. Additionally, make sure that the waistline is below 88 centimeters if you are a woman, and under 102 centimeters if you are a man.

He explains that inheritance is also of great importance.

– If you have parents, siblings or grandparents who have had cardiovascular disease at a young age, ie before 55 years for men and 65 years for women, you should be extra aware and talk to your doctor about follow-up.

Check yourself

In his opinion, Jostein Holmen believes that one can test himself.

– The best test you can take to make sure everything is working is going up a heavy backing. If you can do it without problems you are most likely not to worry about it, he says.
