Many women are at high risk of cardiovascular disease, and while men often experience classic symptoms like chest pain in effort, the signs of women are more diffuse.
– This means that many women can be at risk without being aware of it. This worries me, says cardiologist at Volvat Medical Center Frederic Kontny.
As many as one in three women die of cardiovascular disease.
Symptoms like back pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, nausea and vomiting are common among women who live in the risk zone, and since this can easily be a sign of other ailments, they are often overlooked.
– This means that the possibility of heart disease is underestimated, Kontny believes.
Women should therefore be aware of their own health – especially if multiple risk factors occur at the same time.
Because despite the fact that, to date, people have seen cardiovascular disease like classical human diseases, there are more women than men who die of cardiovascular disease.
This is the main cause of death among women. While a total of 6105 men died of cardiovascular disease in Norway in 2010, the figure for women was 7023.
How to reduce the risk
– Up of the couch! Dance, work, swim, ski or ride. Be active at least 30 minutes each day

He also believes women may have a somewhat higher threshold to go to a doctor and get researched.
– We know that the risk of cardiovascular disease is closely linked to lifestyle and obesity. This is today an equally common problem among women like men, he says.
Common cause of death
In order to reduce the number of deaths due to cardiovascular disease, it is important that female patients are examined well when they come to the doctor. And we can be better off to seek out the doctor himself.
– Heart attack and stroke is the cause of 25 percent of deaths in Norway, breast cancer accounts for 3 percent. Nevertheless, it is common to go to mammography, while happily dealing with a number of risk factors for cardiovascular disease without knowing it. Check the blood vessels
By checking blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar regularly, you will be able to more easily assess whether you are in danger of having heart disease. A specialist will then look at the contents of the deliveries and on how much of the blood vessels were attacked.

– After the check you will be placed in one of three groups – low risk, slightly elevated risk or high risk. If you consider low risk, you can wait for a new check for ten years, Kontny says. Those in the middle group may have slightly elevated cholesterol and measures are taken to reduce the level.
– New cardiac check is taken after five years, while those at high risk should be checked again after two years, he says. Such a check will in addition to the values of the different tests, say something about how likely it is that you die of heart disease for the next ten years.
Risk increases with age
– Both hereditary factors, diabetes and lifestyle affect the environment in your blood vessels. Age is of course also a risk factor, and the chance of heart problems and deaths increases with age, says Ragnhild Aasen Jacobsen.
She is a political adviser at the National Association for Heart and Lung Disorders, LHL. Of lifestyle factors, smoking, diet and physical activity are considered to be particularly important in cardiovascular disease.
And although the risk factors exist for both men and women, there is a certain difference.
– Many suggest that women can withstand smoking even worse than men. Women who smoke daily have two to three times higher risk of heart disease than those who do not smoke, says Aasen Jacobsen.

– Blood pressure below 130/85

– There is also something called metabolic syndrome that increases the chance of heart disease. This syndrome is characterized by obesity around life, increased blood pressure, tends to high blood sugar, increased levels of common fat in the blood and often reduced levels of good cholesterol, she says. This increases the risk of both diabetes and heart disease and when we know that diabetes itself increases the risk of heart disease, the risk may increase further.
To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, you should live as heartfelt as possible.
– Reducing weight is important, as does daily exercise and non smoking. And remember to check the risk factors for the doctor, because without measuring blood pressure and cholesterol, you do not know if the values are too high, “says Aasen Jacobsen..
