A condition for treating stroke is that the affected person comes quickly in hospital.

At the same time it is not always easy to know that a person has had a stroke.

Chain Letter of Stroke

This story stems from a chain letter that has recently e-mailed:

“At a party, a girl stumble – Ingrid – and fell. She assured everyone that she was well (they offered to call a doctor) and had just stumbled in a rock because she had new shoes.

They helped her get ready and gave her a new plate of food – and although she seemed a bit shaken, Ingrid continued to masturbate the rest of the evening. “

Driving in a hospital

“Ingrid’s husband called later and told that his wife had been driven to the hospital.

Kl 6. 00 she was dead.

She had a blow at the party. If you had known how to recognize the signs of stroke, perhaps Ingrid might have been alive today. “

Three danger signals

– There are three signs that will reveal whether a person has had a stroke, says Professor of Geriatrics Torgeir Bruun Wyller at Oslo University Hospital to Click. no.

1. Ask the person to SMILE

– If the person fails to lift the mouthwind on one side and smiles asymmetrically, there may be signs of stroke. He or she will look out in the face, “Wyller describes.

2. Ask the person to LIFT BOTH ARMS

– Although he or she could manage to lift both arms, the person may need control on one arm. Either because the movement seems awkward or because the arm is much weaker than the other and says down after a little while, Wyller explains.

3. Ask the person to SI A SINGLE SETUP

– People with stroke can forget words and what to say. If at all they can express themselves, the speech can be snowy or incomprehensible.

Check this by asking the person a simple question or by asking the person to repeat a simple sentence, counselor Torgeir Bruun Wyller.

Call 113

This is not the time to keep in line with playful facts

He emphasizes that there varies how obvious the symptoms are, but that it is one of the three factors.

– Just throw it over the phone and call the emergency number 113. Then, as soon as possible, they must be hospitalized, “said Wyller.

Blood clot in the brain

Wyller also adds that if the symptoms have occurred gradually, it is most likely not a stroke.

Heart stroke involves 80-85 percent of cases of blood clot in the brain. Brain bleeding is the cause of 10-15 percent of cases, according to Norwegian health information.

Also affects young people

Brain strokes affect all ages, although older are overrepresented.

May die or become disabled

But if the patient does not come to hospital during the first hours after the battle, he or she may either die or become disabled.

New treatments

According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association, there are as many people affected today as in 1969, but mortality has fallen sharply.

– This is due, among other things, to the development of so-called slaughtering units at hospitals over the past 10-20 years, says Wyller.

It is well documented that stroke patients treated in specialized stroke units are more likely to survive and more likely to regain their function than stroke patients treated in other departments in hospitals.

In recent years, we have also got new methods to open clogged blood vessels in the brain. Today, we can remove the blood clot by thrombolysis, ie injecting a drug that dissolves the stopper. Some hospitals can now also remove the plug mechanically using special instruments. Internally we call it “dump fish”.

– Which methods are best suited vary from case to case – it will be the hospital’s assessment, says Professor Wyller.

Should be in hospital within four hours

– The forecasts are better the earlier the patient comes to hospital. After four hours, there will be little opportunities for pro-solving treatment to work, although in some cases it may be possible to treat stroke successfully after six to seven hours. After eight hours, there is no point in trying such treatment, says Wyller.

Some hospitals can now also remove the plug mechanically using special instruments. We call it ‘plugging’

– Even though it has elapsed, patients must still be in hospital. Treatment in kind is amazingly effective for absolutely all stroke patients.

Alcohol conceals the symptoms

– What if you get a stroke at a party – would you like alcohol to mask the symptoms?

– Yes, for example, obscene speech has a clue to being full. In addition, strong intoxication can help trigger strokes.

– In small amounts, however, there is a lot of indications that alcohol can reduce the risk of stroke, says Professor of Geriatrics Torgeir Bruun Wyller.

Smoking – also passive smoking – increases the risk of strokes.

Stroke Risk Factors

Here are some more factors that make you more vulnerable to developing stroke:

  • High blood pressure
  • Previously passed stroke or drip
  • Heart Disease
  • Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2
  • Atherosclerosis (atherosclerosis)
