But both blood type experts, nutritionists and immunologists are skeptical about the theory behind the blood type diets and if at all it’s all about themselves and think it should take more research before you can say anything about the relationship. The supporters of this diet claim that it helps and that it both reduces people’s weight and removes symptoms of allergy and other diseases.

One of the main elements of the blood type diarrhea scheme is that people with different blood types A, B, AB or O must eat different types of food to avoid so-called harmful lectures. Lectins are a type of protein found in the food and which under certain conditions can cause cells to melt into larger units. This is called agglutination. Anne Marie Bakke-McKellep from Norway’s Veterinary College says we still face many unanswered questions regarding the effect of the lectures on the body. Of the hundreds of different homework found in the foods, only a few are analyzed and we can say something about. So far it is clear that lectures can both have positive and negative health effects on animals and humans. Some lectins act as adjuvants for the absorption of important nutrients, while others may act as poison if consumed in large amounts.

Lack of documentation

However, the blood type that each of us has is determining what lectures (and thus foods) we can tolerate are not yet recognized. No comparative studies have been performed in this area and there are no documented effects studies. This is a major problem, according to researcher Kåre Birger Hagen at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, because we risk that a large number of people try out on their own without the requisite prior knowledge of nutrition, and that treatments that do more harm than benefit are initiated.

The question is still unanswered and it is tempting to believe that those who change their diet to achieve such a result, also eat less, much less than they did before – and maybe they move on to the treadmill at the same time. Thus, we still have an open question about what works – the blood type drug itself, reduced calorie intake or exercise.

Not “dangerous”

According to the theory of blood type, people with type O should best enjoy red meat, vegetables, some nuts, fruits and seeds, while those with blood type A should stick to bushes, some fish, soy milk and soy cheese and some oil and nuts. None of the diets allow the use of milk to a large extent.

Clinical nutritionist Margaretha Haugen has made dietary calculations and, depending on what you choose from the different lists, it is possible to put together a diet that satisfies the nutritional needs – with the exception of some vitamins and minerals (for example calcium). This can be corrected using dietary supplements – something that the diet actually recommends.

What to choose?

Most people are keen to eat properly and to eat food that provides the best possible health – provided that it does not require too much change and challenges. Following the blood type drug, however, involves radical changes for most people. Not only purely practical because every blood type should, according to the theory, belong to a particular range of foods, but also because it requires nutrition knowledge to ensure that all necessary nutrients are covered.

So far most nutrition, blood research and immunology professionals are reluctant to give recommendations because there is still a lot we do not know about the effect of the diet. Perhaps it’s not the diet itself that works – but the fact that you take the diet seriously!
